Mai comes off as a brooding, distant person whose only weapon is her sharp tongue. But under her cool demeanor, she’s fearless and a fighter of deadly precision. And while she pretends to find most things boring, annoying, or both, she’s fiercely loyal to the people she truly cares about.

Growing up in the Fire Nation, she befriended Azula and Ty Lee at the Royal Fire Academy, then found herself lonely and isolated in the mountaintop capital of Omashu, where her father governed the occupied city. A quick learner, she entertained herself by becoming an expert knife-thrower, but it wasn’t enough. When Azula showed up with the promise of an exciting mission that would both get Mai out of Omashu and reunite her with her old flame Zuko, Mai hit the road with her intimidating but exciting old pal.

The more twisted Azula’s behavior became, however, the more Mai began to question it, especially as she and Zuko rediscovered their affection for each other. Locked up for defying Azula and helping him to escape the Boiling Rock Prison, she reemerged as a Team Avatar ally after the war.
