On the surface, Sokka appears to be just a sarcastic meat-lover, but there’s a lot more to him. He’s also courageous, resourceful, and loyal. A non-bender who has learned to rely on his wits, Sokka is protective of his friends and loved ones, especially his sister, Katara. And he’s a hopeless romantic who’s written a sappy poem or two.

From a young age, Sokka always wanted to follow in his father Hakoda’s footsteps and become a warrior. When the men of the tribe left to fight in the Hundred Year war, Sokka wanted to join them. Instead, Hakoda tasked Sokka with protecting the village. Sokka took the responsibility seriously. Then one day, Prince Zuko showed up looking for the Avatar.

After helping Aang escape from Prince Zuko, Sokka reluctantly agreed to fly across the world to help Aang achieve his destiny as the Avatar. Along the way, he discovered his own destiny as an inventor and leader — planning invasions and rescues, and even helping to build a hot air balloon that could be used in battle!
